Ah, Labor Day! The lovely, bittersweet holiday that closes out summer’s outings and school vacations. Ever wonder what the celebration is all about?

On September 5, 1882, ten thousand union workers marched through the streets of New York. This first Labor Day celebration culminated in a family picnic and concert featuring speeches by union leaders, including Carpenter’s Union firebrand Peter McGuire — the champion of the eight hour workday. Twelve years later, Congress recognized the importance of the Labor Movement and adopted Labor Day as a national holiday.

Since that time, globalization has reduced the size and influence of America’s industrial unions. That decline has been abetted by our political leaders’ failure to develop policies to promote industrial work within our nation’s borders.

In 1954, one of every three working Americans was represented by a union. Today, that ratio has fallen to one of eight. Yet research shows tens of millions of American workers would join a union today if they did not fear retaliation from their employers.

Public commentary about the value of unions has shifted, too. Hateful denunciations of “big labor” abound in the media. Well-paid pundits such as Ann Coulter, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh pontificate about the “evils” of unionism and the “special benefits” received by unionized government employees.

So what is there to celebrate this Labor Day?

For starters, over 15 million Americans belong to unions (that’s 35 times as many people as voted for Ron Paul in the 2008 presidential election).

Today, unionized workers earn about 28 percent more than their non-union counterparts. Unionized workers are four times more likely to have employer-sponsored health insurance. A union worker is two-and-a-half times more likely to have a pension plan.

Today, unionized construction tradespeople possess striking advantages in their craft thanks to union apprenticeship programs and ongoing skills training and enhancement programs.

Today, unions provide countless opportunities for members to become involved in our nation’s civic life through labor-sponsored political and volunteer activities. Have you noticed that ruthless dictators traditionally crush or try to co-opt unions? That’s because unions are ardent practitioners of democracy.

So this weekend, as you fire up the grill and relax with friends and family, please keep in mind why Labor Day is a national holiday. We are honoring a national movement that survives in spite of difficulties and continues to advocate for better wages, health insurance, pensions, Social Security, family and medical leave, civic participation and workers having a voice at work. The Labor Movement is not just about better working conditions — it is about building better lives for workers.

Peter McGuire called that first Labor Day, “A harbinger of a better age.”

One step toward that better age would be for Congress to adopt the Employee Free Choice Act, which would afford more Americans the opportunity to belong to a union, strengthen the nation’s economy and rebuild the Middle Class.

And that’s what all of us are building, together.

Two picketers — a woman working a crossword puzzle under the shade of a golf umbrella, and a man standing barefoot in the grass — held up a large banner that read, “Shame on Walgreens,” Wednesday, outside the Canby Walgreens on Highway 99E.

Neither of the protesters lives in Canby, nor do they work at the local Walgreens store. Their silent protest was part of a broad campaign by the Oregon branch of the Carpenters Union against Walgreens.

The banner, posted outside the Canby Walgreens this past week, is part of a regional labor dispute.

Protesters from Kahului, Maui, Hawaii to Billings, Mont., have been posting nearly identical banners in front of their area stores, claiming that Walgreens has been undermining local labor standards.

The picketers also hand out fliers that proclaim, “Shame on Walgreens for Desecration of the American Way of Life.”

John Eberhardt, one of Wednesday’s picketers, is a Portland resident representing Carpenters Union 247.
“We are doing all the Walgreens in the Portland Metro area,” Eberhardt said of the local union.

The council, which represents carpenters in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana, is affiliated with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters that is coordinating simultaneous silent protests at 48 locations in 12 states in the western United States.

“Walgreens uses contractors that pay their employees below local standards,” said Eric Franklin, the Kent, Wash.-based spokesman for the regional carpenter council. “We believe working carpenters should have a salary that can support a family and includes a pension and medical coverage. Walgreens hires contractors that provide none of those things. Often, contractors also utilize people who live outside the area.”

The protest may continue outside Walgreens for the next few weeks, he said.

Franklin maintains that Walgreens uses the lowest-bidding contractors to build or remodel its stores across the nation. “Walgreens may be able to point to specific places where they do the right thing, but they haven’t done the right thing across the board,” he said.

Walgreens spokesman Robert Elfinger said the company encourages union contractors to submit bids, and a large number of its construction jobs are performed with union labor.

“We require that all developers and contractors who build or remodel Walgreens stores offer their employees health insurance benefits and a living wage,” Elfinger said. “We require that our developers and contractors bid our jobs to both union and nonunion contractors, and when bids are competitive, we favor union labor.”

Vanessa Page Downing, 26, dies; she’d built a new life for herself

Vanessa Downing was weeks away from finishing her welding apprenticeship — and completing her transformation from homeless “Ave Rat” to inspiring role model — when she was killed in a workplace accident June 24. She was 26.

In one of her final Facebook messages, Vanessa Page Downing channeled ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes to sum up her new attitude toward life: “With a big enuf bar and the right fulcrum I can lift this whole … WORLDDDDDDDD.”

Ms. Downing was weeks away from finishing her welding apprenticeship — and completing her transformation from homeless “Ave Rat” to inspiring role model — when she was killed in a workplace accident June 24. She was just 26 years old but had lived through a lot.

Friends said that when she was a teen, Ms. Downing ran away from a troubled home life and took to living on University Way Northeast, becoming part of a group of homeless teens living on The Ave.

She expressed her wild, spontaneous personality with dozens of face piercings and by wearing her hair in a bleach-blonde double Mohawk, said friend Louisa Peck. Once, Peck said, Ms. Downing sat outside the University Book Store wearing a red wig and revving a chain saw until police arrived.

When Ms. Downing was about 20, Peck said, she decided to kick her drug and alcohol addictions and began attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Peck said she became Ms. Downing’s sponsor at AA.

“At first she was extremely hyper, she had so much unfocused energy. She was always loud and silly,” Peck said. “But all that energy got focused.”

Ms. Downing stayed sober and began working construction jobs. She also started taking community-college classes, sometimes putting in 12-hour days between her job and her studies.

She grew her hair out in its natural color and got rid of all those piercings. About nine months ago, she bought her first house, in SeaTac. She was due to become a journeyman welder within weeks.

At first, Peck said, Ms. Downing found it hard to deal with all the lewd comments at the male-dominated construction sites.

“Eventually that completely stopped being a problem. She used humor and a thick skin, and became so good at what she did that people had to respect her,” Peck said. “She was very determined to journey out and become a leading woman in the field of construction.”

Peck said Ms. Downing became an inspiration to other Ave Rats.

“She not only sponsored other people, but when she told her story, the kids could see she really did know about The Ave — and look at her now.”

Another friend, Val Renata, said Ms. Downing always wanted to help society’s “throwaways.” For instance, she would regularly drive an old character named Ted to AA meetings. Ted had mental-health problems, Renata said, and nobody but Ms. Downing wanted anything to do with him.

Ms. Downing loved to play the guitar and would sometimes work a solo opening act for local bands.

Boyfriend Jacob Reid said Ms. Downing kept her spontaneity. She would walk down the street and high-five strangers, bringing a smile to their faces.

Last Thursday, according to the Seattle Fire Department, Ms. Downing was aboard a construction barge when she was struck in the head by a barge crane. Friends say their understanding is Ms. Downing was crouched over doing some welding and was in the crane operator’s blind spot.

The accident is being investigated by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said Jeannine Lupton, a spokeswoman for the Department of Labor. Lupton said the investigation could take several months.

A spokesman for Manson Construction, where Ms. Downing worked, described her as a “wonderful employee and a very vibrant, energetic young lady.”

Peck said Ms. Downing is an ideal organ donor who will help many others: “Apparently because of the circumstances of the death, a lot of people got the call.”

Ms. Downing’s immediate family could not be reached for this story. A memorial service will be at 6 p.m., July 8, in the chapel of the Evergreen Washelli funeral home, 11111 Aurora Ave. N

On the morning of June 11, 2010, Curtis Thorne, Piledrivers Local 2416, Portland, Oregon, was injured doing what he loves to do. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time when a load of metal came falling down on top of him. Approximentally 50 pieces of metal each weighing 35lbs fell from approximentally 20 feet in the air landing on top of him. From what the doctors know so far, Curt has sustained multiple broken bones and fractures- a broken back, leg (femur), pelvic bone, as well as a ruptured bladder. He also has unknown damage to his intestinal track, however, the doctor’s have not had the time to fully explore the extent of the damage. He was in surgery yesterday from 9 am to 5pm, where the doctor’s main focus was to stop him from internally bleeding to death. They have stabilized the internal bleeding although they are unable to start the reconstruction of everything due to his body being in such severe shock. They have him heavily sedated with multiple machines monitoring his vitals. Today, his body is extremely swollen. His next surgery will begin at 11am to continue to explore his injuries and a MRI is scheduled for his entire body to see if any additional broken bones are found. At this point, much is unknown due to the doctor’s staying focused on just keeping him alive. We are still at the beginning of a long road ahead. For now any thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated. We will continue to update this page as information is given. Curt’s family has set up a “Care Page” which gives updates on his condition and where you can post messages for him. There is a registration that takes a moment to complete but it is free. Curtis Thorne Care Page.
